IT'S NOT TAR SANDS PEOPLE!
While I have never been accused of being an activitist, I do have an understanding that there are people out there that feel passionately about things. Me? I'm passionate about my hatred of ignorant morons. I follow one of the Anonymous groups on Twitter mostly for the "Lulz" to use their term. An unfortunate side effect of this has been my being subjected to all manner of tree-hugging idiocy being retweeted from their account.
I understand the Greenpeace types and their valiant efforts on environmental issues even if I think the vast majority are granola eating hypocrites. I can even go so far as to say that I respect their right to protest against their perceived injustices. What I can't go along with is the fact that every single last one of the stupid motherfuckers can't do their fucking homework and use the correct terminology when ranting about the Alberta Oil Sands.
Yes, there it is. OIL SANDS, not tar sands you reactionist twits. There is no fucking tar in the ground in northern Alberta.
Before I began my career working in the oil sands, I really didn't know (or care) that much about it. Now that I work up here I've begun to educate myself on all manner of topics regarding the extraction and processing of bitumen, the history of the region and the players involved. The very first thing I learned was why it is called the oil sands.
I have been sorely tempted to respond to a number of the posts attempting to explain the difference but I fear the hippies would only get their panties in a bunch and thus negating any sort of rational discussion about their incorrect terminology. Trust me, dreadlocked, pot smoking zealots are not the most literate nor reasonable bunch to pick a fight with. Generally speaking, you would be further ahead to repeatedly smash your skull against a solid object. It would be far less painful than trying to convince them they are in error.
Thus I am left to silently seethe while their rampant ignorance infects the media. The offshoot of this being the media continuing the campaign of misinformation and me being forced to correct people on a regular basis.
The moral of the story is this: If you're going to bitch about something and have any expectation of people listening or respecting your opinion on the matter, consider doing some fact checking first.
